1984年，首届潍坊国际风筝会的举办，拉开了潍坊走向世界的序幕。1988年，在第5届潍坊国际风筝会期间，潍坊市被确定为“世界风筝都”。潍坊国际风筝会的举行，大大提高了潍坊的知名度，打开了潍坊对外开放的大门。“风筝牵线、文化搭台、经济唱戏”，小小风筝大大促进了潍坊经济的发展。

如今，当地的风筝文化孕育出整条产业链。2025年潍坊市风筝文化全产业链总规模已达106.71亿元，产品远销全球70多个国家和地区，占据全球市场份额的85%。这一数据表明，作为“世界风筝都”的潍坊，其产业基础与全球影响力持续增强。如今，潍坊风筝已从一项非物质文化遗产技艺，跃升为年产值过百亿、兼具经济动力与文化创新赋能的地方特色产业。

通过“风筝+文旅”的深度融合，这门老技艺与“王者荣耀”等61个知名IP跨界联名，2025年非遗文创产品营收达9.68亿元。
